    Engro operates two world-scale ammonia plants and has produced 25 million tons of ammonia to date. The company has mastered a spectrum of technologies, ranging from vintage 1960s systems to cutting-edge, state-of-the-art advancements, showcasing its adaptability and engineering excellence over decades.

    In fertilizers, Engro offers an extensive range of nitrogenous, potash, phosphatic fertilizers, and micro-nutrients. With two world-scale urea plants and an aggregate production of more than 45 million tons of urea to date, Engro has upheld 55 years of operational excellence supported by mature systems, robust safety standards, and optimized O&M procedures.

    Since commissioning Engro’s first urea plant in 1968, Engro has expanded annual urea production from 173 thousand tons to 2.3 million tons by 2010, achieved through consistent debottlenecking and technological upgrades.

    1957 Discovery of Mari Gas Field by Esso Mobil joint venture.

    1965-68 Esso Pakistan Fertilizer Company (EPFC) was formed to manufacture and market fertilizers. EPFC commissioned the first Urea plant, marking the largest foreign investment in private sector in the history of Pakistan.

    1978-91 Esso Pakistan Fertilizer Company (EPFC) became Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited (ECPL). Exxon divests its equity from fertilizer business globally; Engro was born through an employee led buyout.

    1992-93 Relocated world-scale Ammonia and Urea plants from Chevron Pascagoula, USA, and ICI Teesside Billingham, UK, to Pakistan. Increased site capacity from 268 KT/A to 600 KT/A through in-house engineering.

    1994 Engro Fertilizers Limited (EFERT) debottlenecked to 650 KT/A through in-house engineering.

    1995 Debottlenecked the fertilizer plant to 750 KT/A with in-house engineering.

    1998 EFERT debottlenecked to 850 KT/A – In-house engineering with licensor support.

    2000 Engro sets up NPK Plant in Karachi at Port Qasim and launches Engro Zarkhez – the branded NPK blend of fertilizer.

    2002 EFERT debottlenecked to 950 KT/A – In-house engineering with licensor support.

    2007-10 EFERT commences 1.3 Met expansion project (EnVen) with an investment of USD 1.1B and achieves an aggregate annual capacity of 2.3 million tons. Developed and executed the world’s largest single-train Urea plant on EP + C basis, assuming full commissioning responsibility without a PMC.
